An implantable loop recorder is a very small heart rhythm monitoring device that stays in place under the skin of the chest for up to three years. An implantable loop recorder is a type of heart-monitoring device that records your heart rhythm continuously for up to three years. It records the electrical signals of your heart and allows remote monitoring by way of a small device inserted just beneath the skin of the chest.

An implantable loop recorder can help answer questions about your heart that other heart-monitoring devices don't provide. It allows for long-term heart rhythm monitoring. It can capture information that a standard electrocardiogram ECG or EKG or Holter monitor misses because some heart rhythm abnormalities occur infrequently.

Cardiac Event Recorder

For example, if you have a standard ECG to help figure out why you're having fainting spells, it will only record any related heart rhythm abnormalities during the few minutes of the monitoring period — usually about five minutes.

Because an implantable loop recorder monitors your heart signals for a much longer time, it's more likely to capture what your heart is doing during your next fainting spell. This information may help your doctor make a definite diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

Implantable loop recorders are one of the newer heart-monitoring devices. Researchers have evaluated their safety and benefit over the last 10 years. A study of people with fainting spells showed that implantable loop recorders had a higher rate of diagnosis of heart rhythm problems than did other monitoring devices.

Researchers also examined the value of implantable loop recorders in people who had a stroke. Long-term heart monitoring uncovered heart rhythm problems that caused the stroke better than hour monitoring did. Doctors used these results to guide treatment with blood-thinning drugs anti-coagulation therapy to prevent another stroke.

You will need to undergo a minor surgical procedure to place the implantable loop recorder. Risks of the procedure include infection or a reaction to the device that causes redness at the incision site.

The procedure to insert the heart monitor is usually done in a doctor's office, with a local anesthetic. Your doctor makes a tiny incision, inserts the device, which is smaller than a key or a thumb drive, and closes the incision. The device stays in place for up to three years. The procedure to insert an implantable loop recorder has some risk because it involves minor surgery.

Your care team will advise you to watch your incision for signs of infection and, perhaps, to limit activities until the wound heals. The device records the electrical impulses of your heart and transmits them automatically to your doctor by way of the internet and wireless technology.

All you need to do is keep the transmission monitor your doctor gives you beside your bed. Transmissions occur while you're asleep.

You can also activate the data transmission process yourself. In addition, your doctor may ask you to keep a diary of your symptoms. Your doctor will interpret the results of your test and call you if he or she has any concerns.Report Abuse. Contact Us.

Allergic reaction to electrodes watervillevalley. Unfortunately, after I wore it for approximately 6 hours, my skin burned.

Then, I broke out in patches of bumps on my chest area and even down on my ankles and shoulders. I still have them after 3 days of not wearing the heart monitor. I called the nurse, and she said to try smaller electrodes. However, they have that same stickly stuff in the middle which I'm sure is causing all the problems. I really need to wear this monitor but I still have all these patches of itchy bumps and I'm afraid to get those weeping sores again. Do you have any suggestions.

Answer Question. Read 14 Responses. Follow - 8. My hubby gets a terrible rash from the electrodes as well, nothing he can do to stop them but he uses olive leaf extract to heal the rash quickly as well as using a perfume free, soap on his skin. I too have a reaction to those electrodes Someone said that aloe vera gel also helps.

I also apply baking soda v gently to the areas when I shower. I get a rash from wearing the electrodes for 24 hours but it's not too bad, just itchy bumps. I may have to wear one for a month though and I really don't think my skin will stand up to that at all. I am considering rubbing a little hydrocortisone cream into the area where the electrodes go.

It's best to minimise the use of steroid creams but I feel that it's use may be warranted if I really need to wear the monitor. My skin breaks out whenever any adhesive whatsoever gets on it, and yes, it gets especially irrated by that gel I to am allergic to the electrodes. I have to use the peds. I have scares on my stomach from the stupid things.Page of 16 Go.

Enter text from picture:. Latest comments:.I have since developed a rash. It itches like crazy!! Yesterday I called and they sent me the sensitive ones. I put one on and the itching has gotten worse!!!

What do I do? Its annoying enough without that damned itching!!!! I take it by rash you mean you have red itchy spots where the electrodes are attached.

That would mean either the conductive gel or the adhesive is irritating to your skin. It's a pretty common complaint. Call the doctor back again and see if you can arrange some sort of change of recording schedule to give your skin a break. In the periods when you don't wear the monitor, you could apply a lotion or cream to help soothe the skin. I have had them placed in different spots I'm so red and broke - out a couple of places have even blood ,came to the area.

I have used lotion. It is possible that you are allergic to the patch. Researching doesn't show what the content of the patch material is, perhaps the irritation is caused by the closeness of having a patch on a sensitive area.

Usually the patch is changed daily and to a different spot. Perhaps that will give you some relief or with your Dr's permission, you might take a over-the-counter antihistamine which would cut down the itching effect. Pain is horrible. Tried everything Ice is the only thing that is helping. It looks and feels like a burn, not an allergy. HAve your doctor relocate the patches to completely new areas.

This will help the redness go away, decrease the itching, and make you feel better. Good luck. Angel C. Answer Save. The mom Lv 7. Heart Monitor Electrodes. Debra Barclay. The elastic was rubbing my raw! When I happened to be in my LBS lusting over a new bike, I saw that they had bag balm for sale at the counter. My parents were dairy farmers and swore by the healing powers of the stuff. It's kind of hard to come by so I picked up a can of it and it seems to help. Well, that and I'm not using it every day like I had been.

You don't mention pain, so I'm doubting chafing; which leaves contact dermatitis and infection. As the HRM spends a good deal of time wet, it makes a pretty good medium for fungal colonization and then infection of you your skin when you wear it. I'd recommend cleaning the monitor strap thoroughly with whatever the manufacturer recommends, and for the skin you could try any of the OTC antifungal creams for ringworm.

Without seeing the rash you got a digital camera? I can't say for sure, but my gut tells me we're dealing with mushrooms here. Disclaimer: I'm just an semi-anonymous voice from the internet.
